Things To Do On A Rainy Day At Home

On a rainy day, the smell of freshly wet earth, the pitter patter of raindrops and cool breezes are perfect for sleeping in and spending time at home. You can spend the day reading, binge watching your favourite shows or even just looking out the window with some hot tea or coffee.

If you grew up in a place where the monsoon season was heavy, you probably have memories of being stuck at home while the power was out. Thankfully, the weather would have been good enough not to need the A/C or fan. That’s when you know that there’s always things to do on a rainy day at home.

Regardless of whether you live with friends, family or by yourself, there’s a fair share of rainy day activities for everyone. If you’ve got people to play with, board games are one of the best ways to pass the time. You build memories that last a lifetime and it can be so much fun, even if you don’t like the rain, you’d wish it rained more often.

Things to do on a rainy day at home

1) Read Away

If you’re alone, try picking up a book. If you are new to it, you can opt for the best books to read for beginners. Reading somehow feels easier when it rains. There’s something about the noise and sitting by a window on a nice, cozy chair that helps the pages slip past much faster than normal. Just in case the power goes out, make sure you keep a few candles handy.

Another great solo rainy day activity you should try is writing. Set up a comfortable reading corner somewhere, maybe a nice corner in your house with a nice desk or a spot outside with a view, and start writing. You’ll be surprised how your mental block will melt away once you just write something.

2) Get Cooking

One of the nicest things on a rainy day are hot snacks like samosas, pakodas or soups and several cups of tea, coffee or hot chocolate. These quintessential cold weather foods will warm you up from the inside and you’ll find that you can’t get enough of them.

If you’ve got an oven, you should definitely try baking something on a rainy day. It is one of the most rewarding indoor activities for adults. The aroma of a cake or a batch of cookies or brownies fills the house so much better when it’s raining.

Think back to what you loved eating as a kid on a rainy day. Learning old family recipes is one of the most fun and rewarding things to do on a rainy day at home. Not only do you pass the time, you also build a new happy ritual for yourself.

Another charming idea on a rainy day is a candle lit dinner. The rain provides a classic romantic ambience and the weather is just right. You can cook or order the perfect meal for your significant other and spend quality time together.

3) Card & Board Games

Back when laptops and smartphones weren’t as common, board games were the ultimate indoors activities for adults and kids alike. Buy simple games like Monopoly or Uno that are easy to learn and make for fun rainy day activities.

Think about where you’ll be playing the game. Somewhere with natural light and a coffee table would be ideal. Our Wakefit Java coffee table is perfect for board games, with enough space for the board on top and all coins, cards and tokens below.

4) Play in the rain

If you’re spending the day at home, just put a couple of towels by the door and go out for some fun in the rain. You can get back whenever you like and dry off quickly to avoid catching a cold.

Paper boat races are a simple and exciting way to have some fun in the rain. The boats are easy to make and if you don’t know how, a quick google search will give you the answer you need. Mark the boats with your own special insignias and find a large puddle or mini-stream for them to sail in.

5) Indoor camping

Pretend you’re in the great outdoors, but indoors. Ration some food, gather around a candle and tell some stories. Better yet, make your own stories with an improvised game where everyone contributes to a story, one sentence or word at a time.

If this is too much work, try word-building or 20 questions or create a rhyme where everyone gets a turn. By the end, you’ll have a unique piece of literature that made everyone laugh as they made it.

6) Pamper yourself

On a rainy day, you have the perfect opportunity for a home style spa session. Put on a facepack, deep condition your hair and relax your heart out. If you haven’t had the time to buy any skin or hair care products, you could try out something homemade instead. If you love to take naps, you can also help yourself with the best pillows for sleeping and have a goodnight’s sleep.

With all of these activities to choose from, we hope you’re looking forward to the next spell of rain as much as we are!
